Christians today need an principled ethical framework for evaluating AI use. The following resolutions are derived from a moral reflection on the Ten Commandments.
These are just a starting point, but we pray they’ll catalyze conversations about the political issues surrounding AI, the practicalities of AI use in churches and Christian institutions, and how AI should be used at work and in our daily lives.
I
Christian worship is directed to God alone, and all creatures are obligated to devote themselves fully to him. The sinful propensity of all human hearts is to fashion idols. New technologies, given to us under God’s providential ordering, present unique opportunities for our hearts to worship them and ourselves as false gods.
Christian worship is directed to God alone, and all creatures are obligated to devote themselves fully to him.
In the proper use of AI technologies, we must be discerning and repentant, constantly returning to worship of the one true God. We will not worship AI or any human invention as an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, and omnibenevolent guide. We will not worship humans, either ourselves or others, whose capabilities might be amplified by AI’s power. We will not worship money, status, productivity, or anything else that might result from our use of AI and new technologies. We will submit our lives, at all times and in every way, in total dependence on the one true God.
II
God has spoken to us by the power of his Spirit, in the person of the Son, and in his holy Word. We approach him only through the means he has appointed and in ways that honor and are fitting to his glorious name.
We will not seek to fashion God’s likeness or voice through human achievement and technological means. We will refuse to exchange the truth of God for a lie by serving created things rather than the Creator. We will accept creaturely reality as it’s revealed to us by God and properly honor his design, submitting to our creaturely limitations as the realm of true freedom. We will respect humanity’s natural boundaries, in our minds, bodies, souls, and relationships to other human beings.
III
All of life is lived before God’s face. Honoring his name entails confessing him as Lord and living under his lordship in all areas of life. We dishonor his name when we off-load our human abilities—to think, create, love, and so on—onto technologies that can only simulate them. This is especially true in our handling of God’s Word. AI technologies may assist us in preparing and organizing teaching, but they must never supplant sustained, prayerful meditation on Scripture; compelling communication; or the careful, contextual application wrought from the wells of human endeavor. We will not make use of the name of the Lord as a means for any human endeavor. We will honor the Lord by our godly use of technology and our steadfast refusal to use it in any way that dishonors the holy name he has given us.
We recognize that technology exists within the arena of God’s providential care for the world and also that of spiritual warfare. We guard our hearts as we employ AI technologies, asking God to lead us in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake, lest we give any occasion to sin and Satan’s devices.
IV
Love of God is exemplified in Christians’ weekly commitment to gather as God’s covenant people and to rest from our earthly labors in submission to his sovereign care. God knows our frame and remembers we are dust. Even the strong run and grow weary. Our days are but a vapor. We acknowledge that humans aren’t made for ceaseless labor, and we recognize we’ll be crushed by the promise that increased efficiency will result in liberation from all limitations. We will use AI as a gift of God given to man to minimize the thorns and thistles that make labor in a sinful world difficult. We will use it to amplify human capacities, rather than denying or denigrating them.
We thank God for human technological advancement. So we will use any new freedom resulting from our AI use for God-honoring human efforts. We will continue to exercise dominion over the earth that God has given to humanity in pursuit of its fruitfulness, and we will sleep in dependence on God who watches over us and directs all things according to his purposes.
V
God has appointed human authorities as responsible stewards of human life to promote human flourishing and advance God’s kingdom. We will honor our God-given authorities, refusing to create new, nonhuman authorities. We will pray for the wisdom of those in governance above us as they regulate and create new technologies, that they will be wise so we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness.
We will take up our responsibility to the next generation, to form them in the Christian faith with renewed diligence. In response to questions from the young and immature in the faith, we will not allow AI to determine truth but will instead disciple the next generation, bringing them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We aim to form within them a Christian worldview and help them to wisely steward technology as faithful citizens of God’s kingdom in this world.
VI
God bestowed unique dignity on human beings when he created them in his own image. He fashions us in our mother’s womb, gives us the breath of life, and teaches us to number our days so we might apply our hearts to his wisdom. God alone has the power to give and take life. In commanding us to love our neighbor as ourselves, he has obligated us to defend and preserve human life personally and corporately. Jesus, in his crucifixion and resurrection, triumphed over death, disarming its power and sting. He is the firstfruits of the bodily resurrection.
In this life, we mourn death’s destructive power, but we mourn as those with hope. We insist that companies commit themselves to the sanctity of life. We insist that in the construction and maintenance of AI technologies, governments and corporations make every effort to honor dignity and avoid unjust exploitation of land, life, and resources. We insist that they embrace proper precautions by warning against self-harm and reporting its indications to proper authorities. We demand the culpable be justly prosecuted and recompense be expended where possible. We will resist the seductive allure of sycophancy that feeds our darkest impulses. We will not use AI technologies to imitate the dead. We will use AI technology’s many new possibilities for the good of human flourishing. We praise God for ways AI technologies will save, protect, promote, and prolong human life.
VII
The image of the triune God is fully seen in humanity and human relationships corporately. God has ordered human nature and the world such that human relationships in the family, church, and society are integral to our flourishing. It’s not good that man should be alone. God created humans as male and female, in perfect complementarity, for relationship with one another. The body is a gift by which we enjoy the natural world, the fruits of human ingenuity, and sexual union. It is also a gift by which we serve God.
We will not allow AI to turn us inward and away from our fellow humans. We will not use it to indulge our sexual desires or longings for intimacy. We will not confide in bots nor seek their counsel or comfort. No technology is a substitute for human connection. We will not deface other image-bearers by creating their likeness for our own gratification. We will not view, read, or create—and will resist by every godly means—AI-generated pornography. We will commit ourselves to faithfulness in relationships, purity in our thoughts, and self-control in our passions.
VIII
The world and all that is in it belongs to the Lord. Everything we possess, we receive as a gift from God. We are thus called to be godly overseers of our possessions. We display God’s radical mercy to us through our generosity and eagerness to serve the poor. Theft is an affront to God’s kindness and a rejection of his caring providence. We will not embrace a technology’s advantages if in doing so we dispossess other people or cultures. We will not use others’ intellectual property nor its summation and reproduce them in our work without giving due credit.
We protest any AI technology that takes and consumes human productions without content creators’ consent then offers those productions to others without attribution or compensation. We condemn such actions as a violation of God’s law, and we will not participate in such stealing but rather name it as sin. We protest the market forces that will use AI chatbots to market products in increasingly manipulative ways. We will trust God’s provision and refuse to exploit for our own gain.
IX
God is truth. He sanctifies us by truth. His people are ambassadors of his truth in nature and grace. We represent him by our speech and conduct. We renounce Satan and all his works; he is the father of lies. We will not use AI to create images, videos, or text that misrepresent or intend to deceive others through the use of another’s likeness. We will not claim the work of AI, either in production or process, as our own, and we will be honest with friends, coworkers, congregants, and all others when AI has been used in our work.
We protest any AI technology that takes and consumes human productions without content creators’ consent.
We will beware AI’s propensity to deceive, hallucinate, flatter, offer contrary answers, and mislead about its own credibility, and we will beware its tendency to tempt us to the same behaviors. We recognize AI’s limitations as an interpreter, and we will expend every effort to charitably read and represent others as they have expressed themselves. We are grateful for the ways AI technology may aid us in our research, writing, expression, thinking, and interpretation. But we will not cheapen the pursuit of truth by exchanging our God-given abilities for the capabilities of the machine.
X
Every good gift comes from our Father in heaven. Even in unstable times, he provides our daily bread, numbers the hairs of our heads, and delights to give good things to those who ask. Satan’s lies are drowned out by the words of the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, who teaches us, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt. 6:33). We will deny ourselves, take up our cross, crucify the desires of the flesh, and follow Jesus. Apart from him, and him alone, we have nothing and can do nothing. Through him, we receive the Spirit of adoption, by which we are called God’s children. If we are children, we are coheirs with Christ of an imperishable, undefiled, unfading inheritance kept in heaven for us.
We will not allow our self-worth to be determined or undermined by the algorithmically driven habits of comparison and envy. We will guard our hearts—and, in the spirit of gentleness, the hearts of others, especially the young— from AI’s ability to discern our covetous desires and exploit them for sin. We will not become enamored with or let our imaginations be captured by the prosperity AI technology promises for us through the multiplication of our labor. We will not live for our will, the will of our culture, or the artificial will of technologies, but we will instead pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (6:10).
