“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Heb. 13:8
Dear Jesus, some changes I like—like sliding between freshly changed sheets, moving from Winter into a Franklin TN Spring, and when fishing conditions change into the perfect cloud cover, water clarity, wind speed, and fish-hunger. However other experiences of change can be heart-deflating, anger-fueling, fear-supersizing, and trust-eroding.
We are 10,000-fold grateful that there is one part of life and our stories that will never change, and that is you, Jesus. Hallelujah, you are “the same yesterday, today, and forever”—the same beauty-abounding, truth-filled, and grace-overflowing Savior. This doesn’t mean you are predictable, manageable, and certainly not boring. But it does mean we can trust you without any hesitation, fear, or doubts. Change doesn’t have sovereignty, only you do, Jesus. Hallelujah, a gazillion times over.
Nothing is random with you, Jesus. Everything is under your sight, reign, and purposes. Nothing shocks or surprises you. You never say, “I didn’t see that one coming.” What you do see coming is the everything-perfect world of the new heaven and new earth you will usher in at your return (Rev.21:1-22:6). You also see us made perfect in love—conformed 100% to your likeness (1Jn.3:1-3). Hallelujah, thank you, and hasten that Day!
Until that Day, Jesus, help each of us see and accept change as part of a far better story than we could ever write. We don’t have to like change, but it’s a waste of energy to curse it. Help us age kindly, not grumpily—not with shoulders stooped in defeat, but with hands raised in worship to the One who does all things well and is making all things new. Because you hold us tightly, Jesus, we can hold everything else loosely. Hallelujah, and So Very Amen
