“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:7
Lord Jesus, the battle for our heart’s trust is daily, tenacious, and vicious. We trust whatever we believe will protect, fulfill, and give our lives meaning. On this August Tuesday, we affirm that only you are worthy of our worship, love, and trust. But we also want to name your competition. In David’s day, it was chariots and horses; in our day many pseudo-saviors and heart-idols claim our trust. The list is endless.
Some trust in their spiritual disciplines, good works, and pious ways. But we trust in your finished work and the full forgiveness and perfect righteousness you have given us. Hallelujah!
Some trust in a spouse’s affection, a lover’s interest, and/or their children’s attachment. But we trust in your steadfast love and the great delight you have in us, Jesus.
Some trust in stock portfolios, real estate, crypto, and gold. But we trust in the immeasurable riches of your grace and our inviolate inheritance awaiting us in heaven.
Some trust in physical attractiveness, taut skin, great health, active libido, and held Yoga positions. But in sickness and in health, in youthfulness and in aging, with toned muscles and love handles—we trust in you Jesus, the truly beautiful One.
Some trust in being included in special groups, circles, and clubs. But we trust in our “in-Christ-ness,” the unbreakable union we have with you, and the rich fellowship we enjoy with the entire Trinity.
Some trust in politics, power, and trashing and thrashing “them”—whoever “them” happens to be. But Jesus, we trust you as our reigning and returning King. We are so loved, so grateful, and so yours. So Very Amen.
