You Can Teach Theology with Picture Books
Teach theology to children? How? And how much can they understand? This workshop will explore the virtues and methods of passing on the doctrines of the Christian faith to children in the home, church, and beyond, so that they grow up firmly grounded in biblical thinking. Along with the basic disciplines of reading and explaining the Scriptures, how might we clearly aim to teach the beautiful truths of who God is, who we human beings are, how God works his plan of salvation for the world . . . in other words, theology?

Christine Hoover serves as the women’s ministry associate at The Austin Stone’s Northwest congregation. She hosts the Ministry Wives podcast and has authored seven books, including Messy Beautiful Friendship, How to Thrive as a Pastor’s Wife, and You Are Not Forgotten (B&H, 2024). Christine is married to Kyle, a pastor at The Austin Stone, and they have three boys. You can find her at her website.

 

Melissa Kruger serves as vice president of discipleship programming at The Gospel Coalition. She is the author of The Envy of Eve: Finding Contentment in a Covetous World, Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood, In All Things: A Nine-Week Devotional Bible Study on Unshakeable Joy, Growing Together: Taking Mentoring Beyond Small Talk and Prayer Requests, Wherever You Go, I Want You to Know, His Grace Is Enough, Lucy and the Saturday Surprise, Parenting with Hope: Raising Teens for Christ in a Secular Age, and Ephesians: A Study of Faith and Practice. Her husband, Mike, is the president of Reformed Theological Seminary, and they have three children. She writes at Wits End, hosted by The Gospel Coalition. Irene Sun was born in Malaysia and is the author of the picture books Taste and See: All About God’s Goodness and God Counts: Numbers in His Word and His World. She studied liturgy and literature at Yale University (MAR) and Old Testament and Semitic languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (ThM). She now teaches her four boys at home with her preacher husband, Hans. They joyfully belong to Pittsburgh Chinese Church.
