Jesus, the Vulnerable, and a Large Millstone

Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Matt. 18:5-6

Lord Jesus, we love you for many reasons. And when we finally see you at your return, we’ll realize there were always 90%+ more reasons to love you. Today, we bless you for your care, passion, and advocacy for the weak, vulnerable, and marginalized. In particular, for children and women.

As horrific as the war in Ukraine has been/is, now we are getting reports of increased predation, sexual violence, and trafficking of children and women. It makes our blood boil and hearts break. If we didn’t believe a Day is coming when you will completely eradicate all evil, we would despair.

There’s a part of us that would like to start giving out “millstone-necklaces” to those guilty of child pornography, predation, rape, trafficking, and all forms of sexual violence. But that is not our calling, and it is way above our “righteousness-paygrade.”

Our calling is to “welcome,” that is pursue, find, and care for the “little ones.” Who are the “little ones”? Certainly, those who are chronologically children, but also those who are just as weak, voiceless, helpless, and powerless.

Where are they? Not just in Ukraine, but also in San Antonio, Nashville, Bozeman, Dublin, Winter Park, Belfast… not just on the street or in warzones, but also in our neighborhoods, churches, and companies. Jesus, give us love, fire, and wisdom to do the hard and heart work of advocacy. So Very Amen.
