All Kinds of Greed

Jesus said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life doesn’t consist in an abundance of possessions.” Luke 12:15
“A person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.” (Lk.12:21)
Lord Jesus, I am familiar with how much the Scriptures warn about greed—the spirit of anti-contentment, the virus of affluenza, relentless “acquisitionism.” But what stands out to me today is your warning about “all kinds of greed.”
I can be greedy for getting, having, and keeping money as easily as anyone—a temptation that still lurks. But your words underscore there are other “currencies” I can over-crave and run after with zeal. Without overthinking it, here are a few things I know I can turn into “fool’s gold,” when you aren’t “functionally” enough for me, Jesus. (Ask Jesus to show you your version of “fool’s gold”)
The mirage of a conflict-void, drama-free, tension-empty life can be more alluring than having 100,000 shares of Apple stock or owning a whole block of property in downtown Nashville. And then there’s the counterfeit money of “what people think.”  As an introvert with a very public calling and life, I don’t crave more attention, acclaim, or “atta-boy’s.” But I can care too much about disappointing people.
Jesus, these are two things (among others) that stand out to me today—two “bogus bills” that I want to trash for the enrichment that only comes from knowing you, treasuring you, and walking closely with you. By the power of the Holy Spirit, be my deepest satisfaction, joy, and peace. So Very Amen.
