“I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle…” (1 Cor 15:9 – written AD 53); “I am least deserving of all God’s people…” (Eph. 3:8 – AD 62); “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.” (1 Tim 1:15 – AD 65).
Dear Lord Jesus, to start with, as Paul says, thank you for coming into the world to save sinners. It means everyone of us, meditating on these verses and praying this prayer, matter and are welcome. We qualify, for our need is so great, only you could save us. And you have, hallelujah, you have.
Also, thank you for the amazing gift of the timeline of the Apostle Paul’s growth in grace—his journey of becoming more like you. These three verses reveal his chronology of becoming more humble, gentle, and grateful—and therefore a better friend, more approachable neighbor, and a more trustworthy leader.
How freeing—as we get to know you better, Jesus, experiencing more of your beauty and grace… We’ll move from pride and defensiveness to humility and quicker repentances. We’ll be less likely to criticize and resent, and more known for our understanding and compassion. The log in our eye will become a greater concern to us than the speck in anyone else’s eye.
We’ll be bold, but not brash; show the fire of love without the harshness of contempt. We’ll seek to be more present than impressive, and more self-aware and less self-centered. Jesus, do this work in me and my friends’ hearts. Make us this kind of friend, neighbor, and leader, wherever you have placed us. So Very Amen.
