Jesus—“the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (1Tim.6:15)
Lord Jesus, this Scripture has been true long before it became a verse in the Bible, but in some seasons of life and stretches of history it feels more precious and essential to us. These three affirmations about you—“blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords”—are our Gospel-sanity in a world of increasing madness—our sure and stabilizing hope in the midst of all chaos and crazy-making (Col.1:27)—the peace that you promise your beloved (Jn.14:27).
Jesus—in response to your glory and grace, we offer these 5 rhetorical questions:
- What would we do if you aren’t the “same, yesterday, and forever”?
- What would we do if you hadn’t come, aren’t risen, and won’t come again?
- What would we do if you didn’t defeat the devil and crush evil on the cross?
- What would we do without the hope you are actively making all things new?
- What would we do without the certainty the earth is “gonna-be” full of your glory one Day?
Indeed Jesus, “there will be no end to the increase of your government and peace” (Isa.9:7). Many nations have a “monarch for a moment,” others live under “tyrants of terror.” Some countries have prime ministers way past their prime or absolute monarchs who are absolutely maniacal. BUT only you are Lord. Only you are worthy. Only you are sovereign. “Hallelujah!” and “Praise God!” from whom all blessings flow—not drip.
We eagerly and impatiently await your return and our coming life in the new heaven and new earth. But you are no less King today, Jesus, than you will be then. Until every knee bows and every tongue confesses you as Lord (Phil.2:10-11), free us to live and love, trust and serve to your glory. So Very Amen.
