God Has Never “Tried” to Do Anything

My purpose will stand, and I will do ALL that I please.” Isa. 46:10

Heavenly Father, on this August Sunday, we rejoice and rest in you as the entire alphabet of sovereignty—from Aleph to Tav (Hebrew), Alpha to Omega (Greek), and our A to Z. You are purposeful and your purposes will stand. Better, or at least as good, “eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Ps.16:11) and everything you do on our behalf is from a heart of joy and pleasure.

You never need to launch a “Beta version” of anything—as though you need to “try something out first.” Instead of trial and error, you specialize in providence and perfection. The past holds no “Oops” for you. The present generates zero nervous sweat. And the future is pregnant with every good thing you have planned for us in Jesus.

Father, this is encouraging and humbling—even as it brings with it a good measure of mystery and the call to trust you more. Though we lapse into toddler-like whining and cynical unbelief, if you put the reigns of the cosmos in our hands for 15 minutes, in 15 nanoseconds we’d hand them back—filled with humility and repentant love.

In our most Gospel-sane moments we know you do “all things well” (Mk.7:37) and will “make everything work out in conformity to your plan” (Eph.1:11). Though our good plans change, your eternal ones stay bedrock and “bankable.” Everything in this world that is causing us distress, dismay, and disgust is temporary.

For you have set an end date on all dying and death, all mourning and moaning, all wars and worries, all sickness and sadness, all political madness and malignant badness. You don’t make “lemonade from lemons;” you are making all things new and beautiful through Jesus. Hallelujah, thank you, and So Very Amen.
