“Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Prov.11:25)
Lord Jesus, I can’t read these words without lifting my heart and hands to you. It’s impossible for me to read the four words, “he who refreshes others,” without thinking of you first and foremost. For no one refreshes a dry and weary heart like you. Your mercies are new every morning, your steadfast love will never come to an end, and your delight in us way exceeds anything we can imagine. Thank you and Hallelujah!
Jesus, you bid us exchange our weariness for a rest only you can give. You give us a peace that passes and bypasses all understanding and circumstances. You fully bore all our sin and shame, and you catch and carry every care we give you. You own our battles and you never stop praying for us. Truly, you are our wonderful, merciful Savior.
Every day this week you will be saying to us in the Gospel, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. An artesian spring of grace and Spirit-refreshment will well up inside you.” (John 7:37). Jesus, I join my brothers and sisters in coming to you right now with our hearts as wide open as the Spirit enables. Slake our thirst with living water. In fact, splash us with two hands full of the river of life that flows through our forever Home in the new heaven and new earth (Rev.22:1-2).
Lastly, as grace runs downhill to us, so it flows freely through us. Jesus, we’d rather be known as gentle refreshers with grace than confident believers with answers. To whom would you send us this week with your kindness, compassion, and encouragement? “Bruised reeds and flickering candles” are everywhere. So Very Amen.
