“Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.” (Isa.49:15-16).
“Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name and you are mine. When (not if) you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” (Isa.43:1-2). “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” (Jer.31:3)
Father, hallelujah, thank you, and “find rest, O my soul, in God alone.” By the power of your Spirit, keep us today from under-believing the Gospel, over-indulging our fears, semi-trusting in your sovereignty, and partially-resting in our “in-Christ-ness.” You never promised us a pain free life; but you have promised us we’ll never have a single Jesus-absent day.
No matter what we do or do not have in life, we are yours by creation, redemption, and adoption. That makes us more precious, safe, and yours than we realize. It would be impossible for you to love us anymore than you already do, Father; impossible for you to come up with a more perfect story for our lives than the one you crafted in eternity; impossible that you will cancel your commitment to finish the work you have begun in each of us and in your entire creation. Hallelujah and thank you!
What is possible is for us to treasure these Gospel riches more deeply in our hearts, experience them more fully in the midst of our bodily aches and heartaches, and reconnect with them more quickly we forget, drift, or ignore them. The Gospel cannot be more true, but it can be more real to us all week long. “Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.” Yea, verily, and So Very Amen.
