Each of Us Is Being Discipled All the Time—No Exceptions

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom.12:2). “Capture every thought for obedience to Christ” (2 Cor.10:5). “Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit” (Rom.8:5). “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable” (Phil.4:8).

Lord Jesus, as those who know and love you, we often get asked: “Are you in a discipleship group? Do you have a spiritual mentor?” The most honest answer by each of us is a resounding “Yes!”—whether we’re aware of it or not. Whoever or whatever is capturing our imagination, filling our minds, forming our convictions, and seizing our affections is discipling us.

Some of us have disciplers who love you and us deeply—who are Gospel-saturated and joyfully equipped with a Biblical worldview. Others of us have disciplers who come to us in the form of bombastic broadcasters and political pundits, podcast prophets and ideological purveyors. But we also have a community of powerful disciplers living inside us. They are our loudest fears, deepest insecurities, treasured idols, and unresisted lusts.

Jesus, help us identify who our real disciplers are. Rescue us, free us, consume and compel us with yourself and your glory. Connect us with those who love you first and seek first your Kingdom. Only you are worthy of our attention, allegiance, affection, and adoration.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, may your beauty, goodness, and truth be the most treasured and life-transforming realities in our lives. You aren’t an add-on, worldview, philosophy of life, political party, or means to any end. Most blessed Lord Jesus, you are our Creator, Redeemer, and King—our righteousness, peace, and joy—the meaning of everything, the sovereign over all things, and the glorious hope of all history. Hallelujah, and  So Very Amen.
