“Your Father knows what you need… Seek the kingdom of God first, and his righteousness… Don’t be anxious about tomorrow…” Matt 6:31-34
Heavenly Father, in the USA it’s mid-term election day. Settle our hearts by your Spirit, as we fix our gaze on Jesus and affirm our trust in you. Since you command us not to be anxious about core issues of life—eating, drinking, and clothing, certainly we shouldn’t over-hope or over-vex about those who will warm the seats of Congress, Governors chambers, and other offices.
As our Father, you know what we need, just like you know what is needed in Uganda, the Sudan, Switzerland, Israel, Ukraine, and China. A Day is coming when you will be exalted among the nations—all of them (Psalm 46:10).
We don’t understand all your reasons for choosing to seat certain kings and remove others (Dan. 2:21). The “secret things”—the hand of providence belongs to you (Deut. 29:29). We do know you have already installed Jesus as the true and eternal King. We also know peace and laughter, not unrest and consternation, fill the courts of heaven (Psalm 2:4-6). Our eternal election in Christ (Eph.1:4-5) is more history and cosmos shaping than any election by mere men of mere men.
So, in all of our seeking, we intend to seek first your kingdom and the righteousness of your kingdom—in the polling booth, by loving neighbors who vote differently than us, and by trusting you for the outcome. Our hope is in you, Father, not in chariots, horses, or men. So Very Amen, we affirm and rest.
