God’s Kindness to Emmaus Bible Church

It is really quite amazing. As I think upon God’s providence, I agree with John Flavel, it is like Hebrew letters, it should be read backwards. This mysterious dealings of God in space and time for his glory and the good of his people is jaw-dropping. At some point I would like to chronicle some of the details of what God has done of late in our church, but for now I’ll provide this brief summary.

About a year ago Emmaus Bible Churchbegan to raise money for a more permanent location. The high school was good for us in the early stages of this church plant but we realized that it was neither realistic nor suitable to expect to be there long-term. So we prayed and watched.

We searched and searched as we gave sacrificially. However, the gap between our budget and the market prices were substantial. After looking at dozens of properties God brought us a building within 4 miles of the high school. It was a 100 year-old Presbyterian Church. To our surprise and delight, the price was within our budget. The building met nearly all of our requirements. So we pursued it. After a whirlwind of the last few months we celebrated our first service in this new building last Sunday! It was a great time of rejoicing for the Emmaus family.

At the same time the original congregation, Wheeler Memorial Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) had just turned 125 years old (that is roughly the same age as Omaha). They are now merging with another congregation here in town. This is also emotional for them. At the beginning of our service this past week, Pastor Ed (from Wheeler) encouraged us as he welcomed us to “Emmaus Bible Church”. His sincerity and love was punctuated by a charge for Emmaus to be faithful with the gospel for 125 year-plus!

So here we sit in this new building. A building designed over 100 years ago with a very strategic placement. It is as if Omaha and the surrounding communities were built around it. In this historic building within this historic part of our city, we are within minutes from downtown Omaha, the major interstates, the military base (Offutt AFB), Sarpy county, and Council Bluffs, IA. In addition, we are right in the middle of Omaha’s growing Latino community. Combine with this also with the fact that Omaha’s evangelical presence is very light (to put it lightly) here in this part of town and we have some tremendous opportunities for gospel advancement. And I can’t think of a congregation better situated and up for these missional opportunities ahead.

I invite you to join us in smiling upon God’s good providence, and unyielding faithfulness to his people. I also ask you to join us in prayer, shaking the trees for gospel fruit for King Jesus. Soli Deo Gloria!
