One Jesus and Two Martin’s

Before me was an impossible-to-count multitude, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands… crying out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

Lord Jesus, pondering John’s vision of your gathered, beloved, loud-praising every-nation Bride, ignites our longings for the Day of your return. It’s also a great way to remember the work of two Martin Luther’s—one from Germany and one from Alabama.

What’s the basis upon which this imperfect countless multitude will enjoy all the perfections of eternity? Only by the Gospel of grace that Martin Luther rediscovered in his 16th century day. And how will it be possible for the most diverse gathering of humanity ever to live forever in perfect relationships, perfect harmony, and perfect everything? It’s the same answer and same Gospel.

Martin Luther King, Jr. helped us understand that the purpose and power of your grace isn’t just to get us into heaven, but also get “heaven into us.” Jesus, you have saved us to become like you, and to love one another as you love us. Hallelujah, thank you, and help us.

A Day is coming when all racism, trafficking, prejudice and tribalism will be eradicated—replaced with kindness, honor, and the richest community imaginable. There won’t be any insiders or outsiders—no “pecking order” or ordering one another around.

Jesus, at your second coming, all bombast, bravado, and braggadocio will be crushed under the weight of your sheer beauty. We’ll never disrespect or hurt one another again. No more wars, or even temper tantrums. No more harm or harming, in any form. Jesus, hasten the Day, and refuel our love for you and one another all the way Home. So Very Amen.
