Not “Pie in the Sky” but Hope in Our Hearts

“God hasn’t destined us for wrath, but for salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him… Encourage each another and build each other up.” (1Thess. 5:9-11)

Abba, Father, Paul’s perspective in this passage is so freeing, timely, and encouraging. There’s so much in life over which we have zero control—outcomes that are hidden, stories appearing “unfixable,” relationships that are messy. But we do know this. Because of Jesus’ finished work and current reign, our future and forever are over-the-top glorious. That’s not “pie in the sky,” but hope in our hearts.

Sooner than we can imagine, we’ll experience no judgment, only your welcome and delight. Not one thing broken, but all things made new and beautiful. Finally and fully, we will be with Jesus and, (though incomprehensible to us). we will become as loving and lovely he is (1 John 3:1-3; Rom. 8:28-30).

Until then, Father, make us grace-fueled encouragers and “builder-upper’s.” Anybody can call attention to brokenness and keep record of wrongs. Anybody can envy, gossip, and criticize. Anybody can live too busy to care, too busy to pray, too busy to love. We’re not “anybody,” we are your beloved children.

Thank you, Father… the darkest clouds often bring the most refreshing rains. Boasting in our weakness remains the best way to taste your nearness and experience your kindness. These “light and momentary” sufferings will soon be eclipsed by truth, goodness, and beauty beyond our capacity to imagine. Thank you, Father. So Very Amen.
