Meditating on the Wonders of God’s Steadfast Love: Praying through Psalm 136:1-5 (ESV)

 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

     Dear heavenly Father, it almost sounds trite to refer to you as “good,” for you are quintessential, archetypal goodness. All goodness finds its source and meaning in you. Nothing can compare with the goodness of your steadfast love for us in Jesus. Because of Jesus’ finished work, your love for us is immeasurable, unwavering, and inexhaustible. O what peace, joy, and freedom this gives us.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever.

     You are the God of gods, because there is no God like you, and there is no God but you. There are only wannabe-gods and demigods, handmade idols and cultural currencies, empty nothings and broken cisterns. You are the thrice-holy God—eternal and glorious, and you love us more than we can possibly imagine or grasp.

Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever;

     Father, having given Jesus to be the Lamb of God on our behalf, you raised and installed him as the Lord of lords and King of kings. Jesus has the hearts of every other king in his hands. He rules over and in all things, for our good and your glory. Nothing and no one can alter or resist his lordship, for he is making all things new. O the security of the occupied throne of heaven and the steadfast love of our God.

to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever; 5 to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever

     Indeed, Father, things are not as they appear in our world—as crazy and out-of-control as things seem. All of history is bound up with you proving the great wonders of your love. You not only made the first heaven and earth, when you send Jesus back, you will usher in with him, the new heaven and new earth. There we will live forever in that perfect estate, as your beloved every nation family. We praise, bless, and adore you for your steadfast, irrepressible, tenacious love. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ strong and grace-full name.
