Our Busy Rushing Ends in Nothing

This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” Lam. 3:19-24 (NIV)

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isa. 26:3 (ESV)

We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. Psalm 39:6 (NLT)

Heavenly Father, some of us begin today with a schedule that’s giggling at us—even mocking us. There’s too much on our plates, too few hours in this Wednesday, and too little grace in our hearts. Therefore, these Scriptures are precious, timely, and necessary. May we remember what really matters, and Who matters the most.

Thank you for your steadfast, inexhaustible, peace-giving love. By the reckoning of heaven and the riches of the gospel, today isn’t for proving our worth or making people happy. It’s about knowing you, bringing you glory, and enjoying you. We won’t add an hour to our lives by stress and worry. But we will rob people we love.

Far better to do a few things well today than plow through our lists, treating people like projects, problems, and paychecks. Help us remember, all day long, the only thing that counts is “faith expressing itself in love” (Gal. 5:6). Kindness trumps productivity, and our “to love lists” must matter more to us than our “to do lists.”

Father, you are our “portion”—that is, our joy, peace, and inheritance. So, we will hope in you today, not in people’s approval, a demand free life, or the pride of accomplishment. Give us the power and wisdom we’ll need today to do what is needful. Also grant us the grace we’ll need to live and finish this day with quiet and kind hearts. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ powerful and trustworthy name.
