Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!” The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (Ps.46:10–11)
Abba, Father, whenever I hear the command to “Be still,” my brain tells me to “Sit still!” But you’re telling me to BE still, not sit still. The Gospel is the difference between the two. You’re not impatient or frustrated with me; you’re sovereign and caring for me. You’re a fortress of comfort for broken people like Jacob and me; you’re a haven of rest and a strong tower of grace for all of us who humble ourselves and abide in your love.
When I am still—I remember that you are God and nothing and no one else is. That’s the best news of this or any day. You have no competition—counterfeits, but no competition. There are demigods, semi-gods, wannabe gods—but only you are God.
Kings, presidents, emperors, and premiers aren’t in control. Jesus is their ruler and you are in charge of their enthroning and de-throning. Storms, wars, failing health and environmental disasters are horribly disruptive; but they don’t have sovereignty—only you do.
My circumstances, the opinions of others, getting older, and the choices of my loved ones can seize temporary emotional dominion over my heart; but just for a moment and I want there to be less and less of those moments.
Abba, you are and will be exalted among all the nations and in all the earth. Also be exalted in the “dailyness” of today and in the continent of my heart. Give me 10 times more joy in trusting than I have ever had before. Give me and my friends Gospel-eyes to see your hand and heart at work everywhere all the time. Thank you and So Very Amen.
