“I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus… for they refresh my spirit.” (1Cor.16:17-18). Jesus, our faithful, loving Good Shepherd… “restores, refreshes, renews my soul” (Psalm 23:3).
Lord Jesus, these three brothers, “Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus” and these three sisters, “Phoebe, Euodia, and Syntyche” (Rm.16:1-2, (Phil.4:2-3) … names we usually “race through” to get to the “meat of your Word.” But actually, they were 100% prime protein spirit-refreshers, heart-nourishers, and soul-renewers. Increase their tribe, Lord, and multiply their progeny.
The Apostle Paul could say of them, “I am always glad to see these friends come through the front door—or any door. They have a “knack,” way, and heart for giving me encouragement and perspective, and care laughs when I need those things the most.”
Jesus, thank you for our sisters and brothers who play that treasured and essential role in our lives. Like Paul to the Thessalonians, they don’t just give us the Gospel (which we always need), but their very lives as well (1Thess.2:8). More like a nursing mother (1Thess.2:7) than a harsh dad, (Eph.6:4), they love us well. Make us increasingly like them. Instead of pressure, critique, and agenda, they are conduits of YOUR kindness, presence, and joy. Jesus, you are the headwater, river, and fountain of the sweetest and most deeply satisfying refreshment.
“Flickering wicks and crushed reeds” love it when you show up. When you “come through the door,” nobody feels they need to tidy the desk, feign okay-ness, or “present well.” You are near and dear to the brokenhearted, weary, heavily burdened, thirsty, and restless. Hallelujah, and thank you, Jesus. Be all of that to us and emit all of that grace through us. So Very Amen.
