Embracing Uncomfortable Church: Challenging the Idols of a Consumer Culture

This breakout titled Embracing Uncomfortable Church: Challenging the Idols of a Consumer Culture with Brett McCracken was delivered at The Gospel Coalition’s 2018 West Coast Conference in Fullerton, California.
In a culture that worships comfort and autonomy, and where pervasive consumerism infects even our approach to church (“church shopping”), pitching Christian community as inherently “uncomfortable” seems like it would be counterproductive. But the discomfort of church community and the countercultural cost of discipleship are crucial, unavoidable, and (ironically) appealing to a generation skeptical of sugar-coated and too-convenient Christianity. In this workshop, Brett McCracken (author of “Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community“) talks about how to identify and winsomely challenge “comfort idolatry” in our churches, and how to build churches where healthy discomfort is embraced rather than avoided.
