Cohort Description
“We don’t believe instead of doubting; we believe while doubting. We’re all Thomas now.”
These words, written by Jamie Smith, capture a reality many feel today. As the winds of our culture continue to blow to and fro, many in the church have become caught in the crosswinds. Unsure if they can continue to stand firm in the faith, many anxiously wonder what they should do. Some are afraid to confess their doubts, others want to argue their way through unbelief, still others have just given up and taken cover outside the church. What does it look like to doubt your own doubts, to confess “I believe, help my unbelief,” and to walk with others to rediscover the firm ground of Christ?
Join us for this five-week course as we explore a way—grounded in the gospel and geared for our contestable age—to find hope amid the storms of doubt and disillusionment.
Those who sign up for this cohort will receive free copies of:
- Surprised by Doubt by Joshua Chatraw and Jack Carson
- Blaise Pascal by Graham Tomlin

Content Summary
Session One
The (Not So?) Safe Confines of Attic Christianity with Joshua Chatraw
This lesson will explore the cultural features that are forming the conditions for doubt and disillusionment. By building off of C. S. Lewis’s metaphor of Christianity as a house, this lecture will address legitimate concerns leading to disillusionment and treat doubt pastorally.
Session Two
Looking Outside the Christian House Part I: New Atheism and Optimistic Skepticism with Joshua Chatraw
Since doubting one belief always involves affirming another belief, it is important to be just as discerning about new beliefs as we are with those we are considering leaving. This lecture will explore two spaces outside of Christianity that people are being influenced by or even adopting for themselves: New Atheism and Optimistic Skepticism.
Session Three
Looking Outside the Christian House Part II: Open Spirituality and Mythic Truth with Jack Carson
This lesson will continue exploring “faith” options outside of Christianity by exploring the beliefs and ways of life offered by two growing spaces: Open Spirituality and Myth Truth.
Session Four
Main Floor Christianity Part I: Looking at the Foundation and Load-Bearing Walls with Joshua Chatraw
Christianity has long held to core beliefs, “load-bearing walls,” which we are meant to center our faith on. By exploring these walls, this lesson will enable Christians to refocus their faith on the central claims of Jesus while leaving space for disagreement and mystery in a variety of different doctrinal beliefs.
Session Five
Main Floor Christianity Part II: Looking Along and Stepping into the Light with Jack Carson
At times Christians have neglected the experiential and illuminating aspects of following Christ, reducing Christianity to a set of propositions to be affirmed. While maintaining the importance of doctrine, this lesson explores the importance of both the illuminating power of doctrine for our lives and Christianity as a way of life.
