“The Council recognized Peter and John as two men who had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13
Lord Jesus, this simple story indicts and invites my heart. Two unschooled, ordinary fishermen—Peter and John, were radically changed all because they enjoyed a real and robust relationship with you. They weren’t ashamed to be recognized as your “guys.” Though in time it would cost Peter and John their lives, knowing you gives us a life that can never be taken from us—eternal life. Hallelujah, and thank you.
Each of us is recognized by a wide variety of things—some that we choose and some just come with who we are. Some people know we’re in the room by our laugh, height, or the sound of our voice. Other people most readily associate us with our favorite sports team, political alliance, hobby, profession, or preoccupation. Some of us smell like rush to those around us, or rigidity, or religion.
When I think about my spiritual parents, Jack and Rose Marie Miller—both now with you in heaven, I instinctively think about you and the Gospel. What more could any of us desire in life? Jesus, when I hear your name, I don’t necessarily think about Jack and Rose Marie; but it’s impossible for me to hear their names or see their pictures and not think about you.
Jesus, as I continue today on retreat today with four dear friends—like Peter and John, we’ll be fishing too. But more than ending this day and our retreat smelling like Walleye, Pike, and Muskies—may we smell like you, Jesus—to each other and anybody else. Restore the aroma of grace in our lives. Restore our first love for you and our first treasuring of the Gospel. Help us help each other finish well—no matter how much QTR (quality time remaining) you have determined for us. Hallelujah, thank you, and So Very Amen.
