“The imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit is very precious in God’s sight.” (1 Pet. 3:4) “We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother…” (1 Thess. 2:7) “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Prov. 15:1) “Your gentleness made me great” (Psalm 18:35).
Lord Jesus, as with all the Scriptures, these passages immediately make us think of you. Every time we orient our hearts towards you, you greet us, grace us, and grant us the perspective we need. Thank you. Here’s what we crave, Lord.
Right in the middle of this week, fill us with gentleness, kindness, and words of encouragement for others—including those with whom we differ on any of many issues. At a time when many are thinned-skinned, fear-intoxicated, and hair-trigger sensitive… grant us the revolutionary power of a non-anxious, non-judgmental, caring presence. Anybody can be “mannish”; we want to be like you, Jesus.
As you spoke this world into existence, so speak quietness, peace, and caring deep into our hearts. Liberate us for your glory and our tongues for your praise. Clearly, Jesus, we’re not yet as free as you intend, joyful as you pray, or trusting as you deserve. So, by the power of your Spirit and the riches of your grace, do a fresh work in our hearts. So Very Amen we pray, in your ever-so-glorious name.
