How Much Does God Love Us and Why Does It Matter?

“See and savor the greatness of God’s love that he has lavished upon us” (pp IJn.3:1)

Heavenly Father, how everlasting and unfailing is your love for us? How “lavish” is it? It has no beginning, middle, or end. It cannot be measured, fathomed, or domesticated. You loved us before the world began. You loved us savingly when you hid our lives in Jesus. You love us now as much as you love Jesus—as hard as that is for us to imagine.

The geography of your love has a height, depth, width, and breadth that can only be explored/experienced through the Gospel and by the work of your Spirit. If we set the GPS of our heart on your love, it will always take us straight to Jesus. Why is this so? Before he died on the cross for us, Jesus lived in our place for us as our substitute. You have declared Jesus’ cross as our Judgment Day and have credited his perfect life to us—as though we lived it. You are that generous and the Gospel is that glorious.

Right in the middle of October 2026, you don’t love us to the extent we are like Jesus but in Jesus. We cannot add to your love for us, and we cannot decrease it. You will cease to be God before your affection for us wanes, fails, or withdrawn. Even when you discipline us, you do so with a heart of compassion and kindness. You are like no other Father.

You will convict us but never condemn us. You will humble us but never humiliate us. You will shape us but never shame us. You give us daily mercies but never contempt. You began your work of redemption in us and you will surely complete it (Phil.1:6). Oh Father, thank you. Make the riches of grace more precious, real, and transforming than ever. So Very Amen.
