A Quartet for Now and the Ages

All of you, seek to have “unity of mind, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble attitude” (IPet.3:8)

Lord Jesus, a part of my soundtrack growing up included groups with the number four in their name—The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, and The Classics IV, to name a few. But this one verse from Peter lists a quartet of “voices” whose music our generation desperately needs: Unity of Mind. Brotherly Love. Tender Heart. Humble Attitude—what a foursome. Make of us such a beautiful, harmonic people, Jesus—in our churches, friendships, marriages. Tune our hearts to the music of the Gospel, and turn up the volume to 11.

Peter’s day and our day have so much in common—political crazy and power grabs, external threats and internal fears. In this vortex of vulnerability and uncertainty, the devil roams around seeking to devour (1 Pet.5:8), or induce us to “bite and devour one another (Gal. 5:6).  His sole intent is to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). But Jesus—not just your intent, but your irrepressible commitment is to fill the earth with your truth, goodness, and beauty. Use us to that certain, ultimate, and glorious end.

Jesus, as we live, walk, and work among people (including believers!) with strong opinions and diverse perspectives, palpable fears and growing anger … grant us your empathy, gentleness, and kindness. Convict us when we’re feeling more “brotherly shove” than brotherly love. By the power of your Spirit, turn our anxious hearts into tender hearts. May our humility grow, as our trust and love for you is renewed. So Very Amen.
