One in five families in the U.S. has a member with a disability, but that number isn’t represented in our churches each Sunday. To reach these families with the gospel and disciple them, our churches can take steps toward greater accessibility and hospitality.
In this cohort, we’ll lay a biblical foundation for disability inclusion, learn more about common disabilities and the barriers that keep those with disabilities from attending church. Then, we’ll learn how to build ministry environments where kids, students, and adults with disabilities can belong and be discipled, how to offer support to caregivers and typical siblings, and how to spread the word about our disability ministries so we can reach more people with the gospel.

The Bible speaks of disability from Genesis to Revelation, and we can look to Scripture to understand that every person is made in the image of God and has the potential to have a relationship with him. In this session, Hubach will discuss passages that shape our theology of disability and explain how the biblical worldview of disability differs from modern and postmodern views in our culture.
Every community includes people with disabilities, but many of them don’t attend church because of the barriers they face. In this session, we will talk about common disabilities and how we can support people who are affected so they have the opportunity to be a part of a church community.
People with disabilities have a wide range of needs we can be ready to meet by preparing our programs, policies, and ministry environments. In this session, we’ll talk about inclusive and specialized options for support, what current policies you might need to adjust, and how to meet sensory needs with buddy bags and sensory items such as fidgets as well as spaces such as quiet corners or sensory rooms.
Everyone has a role to play in making our ministries truly inclusive. In this session, we’ll discuss how to equip all your teachers and volunteers, how to recruit and train specialized helpers, and when to add dedicated staff to your team as your ministry grows. You will also learn how to encourage positive behavior choices for ministry participants so you can equip your team with the best tools and techniques.
Disability ministry is discipleship ministry. As ministry leaders, we can be faithful to our calling to evangelize and disciple people with disabilities just like we do all the participants in our ministries. In this session, we’ll talk about sharing the gospel in understandable ways, adapting lessons for every learner, and choosing appropriate curriculum. You’ll also learn how to use a helpful tool to support spiritual growth: individual spiritual plans (ISPs).
The whole family is affected when a member has a disability, and parents and typical siblings also need support from their church. In this session, Wall will share how churches can meet the practical and spiritual needs of family members through each life stage and remind us of the blessings our churches receive from these families.
Although disability inclusion often starts in children’s ministry, every ministry area can be prepared to welcome and include people with disabilities. In this session, we’ll focus on supporting teens and adults through opportunities for fellowship, discipleship, worship, and service with their gifts.
Once you are prepared to welcome people with disabilities and their families, you’ll want to let your community know! In this session, Golik will discuss how to communicate on your website and with your congregation what your church offers families. You’ll also get ideas for outreach events that bless families in your community and reach them with the hope of the gospel.
