Book News: We’re less than two weeks away from the launch of my next book, Rethink Your Self: The Power of Looking Up Before Looking In.

  • Here’s a short video where I describe the people I had in mind as I wrote the book.
  • “Want to Find Yourself? Stop Looking Within Yourself?” An adapted article from Rethink Your Self in Relevant Magazine.
  • “The ‘New You’ Isn’t the Answer.” An adapted article at The Gospel Coalition.
  • If you’d like to begin reading it right now, the best way to do so is to preorder it at one of the online retail stores listed on the Rethink Your Self website. Then, you can redeem your receipt by filling out this form, and B&H will send you a link so you can begin reading the eBook via NetGalley. You’ll also be entered to win a collection of my favorite books.

Podcast Pick: This week’s episode of American Elections: Wicked Game covers the 2000 Bush/Gore campaign and the legal challenges that followed the close call in Florida.

Kindle Deal: This is a fantastic book—The Preacher and the Presidents: Billy Graham in the White House by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy. $1.99.

Seven of the best articles I came across this week:

1. David C. Downing – The “Lost” C. S. Lewis Tapes on the Ransom Trilogy and Chaucer. More audio of C. S. Lewis has been found, including portions of Perelandra, That Hideous Strength, and (in middle English!) the preface to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

2. Andrew Wilson – Is the Church a Victim of Success? The WEIRD Truth. I love reviews that juxtapose two books that may seem to be related and yet say different things with different approaches. This one from Andrew Wilson is one of those. Terrific analysis!

3. Mary Wiley – 8 Theological Terms Everyone In Your Church Should KnowI always appreciate Mary’s passion for theological education in the church.

4. Joel Cuthbertson – Radio Theatre and the Problem of Evangelical Art. An intriguing long form essay that explores evangelical art, with Adventures in Odyssey and radio drama as the primary consideration.

5. Alec MacGillis – The Students Left Behind by Remote Learning. “For the foreseeable future, Shemar would be spending his days as he had spent the spring and the summer: in a dark room, in front of a screen, with virtually no direct interaction with kids anywhere close to his own age.”

6. Perry L. Glanzer – Rod Dreher Is Not Pessimistic Enough. Perry Glanzer offers some good pushback and interaction with my review of “Live Not By Lies” by Rod Dreher. He believes Dreher and I underplay the potency of increasingly concentrated power in American life.

7. Tim Challies – Things I Did My Kids Never Will. “Be kind, please rewind.” Mixtapes. Dial-up internet. We’re getting old, folks.
