WHAT ARE THE GOSPELS?

Written by Richard A. Burridge Reviewed By Alistair I. Wilson

This is the second edition of Burridge’s published thesis, which was originally published in 1992, and is another welcome addition to the important Biblical Resources Series jointly published by Eerdmans and Dove Booksellers. The first edition of this book had a significant impact on scholarly discussion of the character of the gospels and so it is good to have an affordable version of the book available (although CUP are to be commended for having made available a paperback edition of the original SNTSMS version). Yet, this is not simply a reprint of the first edition. Not only has Burridge ‘given a general overhaul’ to the main body of his book, but he has also added a substantial chapter which engages with the various scholarly responses to his original book which have appeared in the intervening decade or so and then suggests ways in which the debate might be taken forward. These additions should make this book all the more useful.
