Excellence in Leadership

Written by John White Reviewed By Bill Houston

Since his days as a medical student, John White has been fascinated by Nehemiah, who has been his model for leadership and a source of inspiration. What flows from John White’s pen gives ample evidence of this.

As we have come to expect, the style is warm, personal, honest, practical and fresh, being illustrated by numerous life-related anecdotes. Nehemiah is made to live, both in his historic context, and as a model for Christian leaders today.

Topics covered include: the leader and prayer, organization, work, opposition of various kinds, renewal and endurance. There is a personal ring of truth in many of his statements, particularly his coverage of Christian work and the ‘workaholic’ syndrome. Lively phrases pepper the book such as ‘spirituality is no substitute for sweat’!

This is not a commentary on the book of Nehemiah, nor is it an academic study arguing matters related to dating, the relationship of Ezra to Nehemiah, and the like. It is a study of leadership based on the life of Nehemiah. As such, it is a helpful study for students, and a valuable source book of talks and sermons on the subject.
