TRANSFORMING CONGREGATIONAL CULTURE

Written by Anthony B. Robinson Reviewed By Steve Spriggs

Reflecting on many years of work in pastoral ministry Robinson gives us his wisdom on how to lead a church in a changing world. Robinson’s experience has led him conclude that ‘mainline’ churches (meaning those within traditional denominations) are failing to engage with people in a changing world. The changes he describes are primarily north American, but not entirely irrelevant to a British audience.

Robinson suggests that it is not enough to attempt to make small improvements in the life of a church. It is a more of a root and branch change in the culture of the church is necessary. He suggests a number of ways in which mainline. American churches need to adapt. These suggestions include moving from a ‘civic faith to human transformation’, from ‘board culture to ministry culture’ and from ‘community organisation to faith-based ministry’. Robinson concludes by offering six strategies to help the church leader transform their church.

It is not a bad book, but unlikely to be of great use for undergraduate theology and religious studies students. Really it is a ‘how to’ manual for church leaders and by no means the only one available. Where it is not the best I’ve come across neither is it the worst so if you are looking for something of that genre do check out the other options before purchasing a copy.
