Theological Lexicon of the New Testament, 3 vols

Written by Ceslas Spicq, trans. and ed. J.D. Ernest Reviewed By Richard S. Hess

This work is a translation of Spicq’s Notes de lexicographie néo-testamentaire which appeared between 1978 and 1982, therefore it does not represent the latest in NT scholarship. Comparison is invited with Colin Brown’s dictionary. Both originally appeared about the same time, are published in three volumes and contain competent word studies on a variety of important NT words. In both the lxx and pseudepigraphal literature, as well as the Classical authors, are studied to determine the full semantic range of the word according to its usage. Unlike Brown, Spicq lists his entries according to the Greek spelling. There is also a greater usage of the papyri and other Hellenistic Greek sources. English readers will find a wealth of information here for interpreting the NT.
