THE STORY OF JOSEPH AND THE FAMILY OF JACOB

Written by R. S. Wallace Reviewed By Philip Johnston

Here the author of the BST volume on Daniel (and other works) turns his attention to a much earlier OT story, in a format aimed at personal or group Bible study Genesis 37–50 is covered in 13 chapters of 10–12 pages. Each chapter begins with the biblical text, and continues with a largely theological and devotional commentary. The book contains much perceptive comment from an experienced teacher, and will provide good background material for a study leader. But it is an older format, and contains both too much and too little. Why include the biblical text, when all readers will have their own copy? And why not add questions, discussion starters, seed-thoughts, etc, to move users beyond passive reading of someone else’s reflections to active engagement with the text itself?
