The Message of 1 Timothy and Titus (The Bible Speaks Today)

Written by John R.W. Stott Reviewed By Stanley E. Porter

The General Preface distinguishes between a commentary and this New Testament exposition on the grounds that the former elucidates, rather than applying, the text. Despite the disclaimer, Stott’s work is a commentary on the texts of 1 Timothy and Titus. For purporting to be an exposition, this commentary is surprisingly thorough in the coverage that it gives to issues, citing pertinent and up-to-date bibliography. Nevertheless, the practical relevance of this work comes through. In the discussion of 1 Timothy 2:1–15, Stott makes generally insightful comments on some of its tricky issues, also taking time to lay out a hermeneutical framework for interpretation. The introduction is devoted to one issue—the question of authorship, where Stott defends Pauline authorship. This commentary comes with a fifteen page study guide bound with it.
