THE FAITH OF ISRAEL: A THEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

Written by William J. Dumbrell Reviewed By Nathan MacDonald

Dumbrell’s theological survey will already be familiar to many readers of Themelios from its first publication in 1988, and something of its ongoing popularity is indicated by this second edition. Thoroughly revised and incorporating insights from recent scholarship, this survey proceeds through each of the OT books according to the Hebrew canonical order. Throughout attention is given not only to historical and literary aspects, but also, and especially, to theological themes. Even with a work of such breadth and comprehensiveness it is inevitable that some matters will be considered to the detriment of others. Dumbrell has an eye for the central Christian story of salvation and certain books receive extended attention (Genesis 1–11, Latter Prophets, especially Isaiah and Hosea), whilst others are underrepresented (Pentateuch, Former Prophets, Psalms). Few works of this scope are immune from such criticism and it is difficult to imagine that any student of theology would not benefit from studying with this in one hand and a Bible in the other.
