Religion in Europe: Contemporary Perspectives

Written by Sean Gill, Gavin D’Costa, Ursula King (eds) Reviewed By Stephen N. Williams

Sean Gill’s introduction to this volume informs us that most of its chapters are adapted from public lectures on the theme of ‘Religion in Europe’ organized by the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Bristol. With the exception of that introductory piece, none of the three editors contributes essays to the volume. The 12 chapters cover Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Hindus, Buddhism and European Culture, Sikhs, and New Religious Movements (all in Europe), plus essays on Women in the Churches of Europe, Religion and Socialism, Religion and Nationalism, Christian Churches and Political Change in Eastern Europe, and Interfaith Developments in Europe. Brief details of the contributors are given and chapters contain end-notes, but there is no index.
