IN SEARCH OF A CONTEXT: THE FUNCTION OF SCRIPTURE IN MARK’S NARRATIVE

Written by Thomas R. Hatina Reviewed By Alistair I. Wilson

This is a published version of a thesis written under the supervision of Dr J. Nolland. It is a technical work and will be of most use to those who have completed several years’ training in biblical studies and the biblical languages. In this first part, Hatina survey’s recent literature on Mark’s use of Scripture and argues for a method that is sensitive to narrative, history and theology at once. In the second part, Hatina examines five portions of Mark’s Gospel in which there are quotations from the OT in order to call for greater attention to be paid to Mark’s narrative context when interpreting these texts.
