Illustrated Encyclopedia of Bible Places

Written by John J. Bimson Reviewed By Richard S. Hess

It is difficult to find such a useful and reasonably priced collection of information about the places named and relevant to biblical study. The articles are written clearly by specialists in the field and often include bibliographies that tend to select some of the best material up to the late 1980s. Almost every page has colour photographs, maps, charts and illustrations that provide a helpful tour of the biblical lands. Extra-biblical sites such as Alalakh and Mari are included, although equally significant sites that have emerged in importance in the last decade are sometimes overlooked (e.g. Emar). Recent excavations related to Bethsaida, Ashkelon and Ekron are mentioned but no detail is given as to the significant finds there. The clarity of description and the beauty of presentation make this work a useful tool of study for Bible teachers and students and for college and church libraries.
