This is a published version of thesis written at Harvard Divinity School. It is a technical work and will be of most use to those who have completed several years’ training in biblical studies and the biblical languages. Williams first traces the use of the phrase ‘theology of the cross’ since Luther, then, after dealing with some introductory matters relating to the letter to the Philippians, he carries our ‘rhetorical-exegetical analysis’ of Philippians 2 and 3. Finally, he considers Paul’s use of ‘cross’ terminology in Philippians.
