A CONCORDANCE TO THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT, SIXTH EDITION, FULLY REVISED

Written by Moulton and Geden, I. Howard Marshall (ed.) Reviewed By Jamie Grant

Moulton and Geden’s Concordance to the Greek New Testament (MG) was first published in 1897 and, as I. Howard Marshall points out in his preface to this sixth edition, it has been a vital tool for generations of students of the NT ever since. This latest revision seeks to ‘refit MG for the twenty-first century’, in particular by correcting errors found in previous editions and also by adapting the concordance to bring it in line with the latest understanding of the Greek NT text. The strengths of the original MG—its simple format, comprehensive nature and single volume presentation—remain in this new edition and bringing the concordance into line with the fourth edition of the Greek NT is a considerable benefit. Another substantial plus of MG 2002 is the presentation of the Greek text, the font (though small) is clear and easy to read. Some may question the rationale which lies behind the publication of a concordance of this nature in a time when computerised texts of the Old and New Testaments may be searched for every occurrence of a particular word in a fraction of a second. Such, however, is the clarity and ease of use of MG that it rivals even electronic versions and will, no doubt, continue to be a vital tool for all those who seek to study in depth the contextual usage of any word found in the Greek NT.
