(Japanese) The Supremacy of God in Preaching

Situation

Japan is home to nearly 130 million people who run the world’s second most powerful economy. It is also one of the greatest mission challenges of the world as only 0.2% of the population attend church. According to the Joshua Project, the Japanese are the second largest unreached people group in the world.

Freedom of religion is a guarantee that is enjoyed by all residents of Japan and yet, over 80% of the population claim absolutely no religious affiliation. However, if asked, most people claim some form of idolatrous ancestor worship. With an aging population, the younger generation tends to be self-absorbed. Japan is one of the few nations with a negative birth rate and is seeing a decline in population. Missionaries, for generations, have worked diligently to plant churches, yet with only small responsiveness from the people. The nation has also been cultivated by many cults and other Quasi-Christian groups (Moonies, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc).

Yet, in God’s grace over 1,200 missionaries now live in Japan and are seeing a small, but growing response as people find a lack of fulfillment in modernism, social life, and ancient traditions. Missionaries and mission agencies are now networking to provide mutual support and encouragement in a country that has been resistant to the Gospel. Collectively, these indigenous and foreign missionaries are finding new ways to present Christianity and plant churches.

The Resource

According to Warren Wiersbe, The Supremacy of God in Preaching “'calls us back to a biblical standard for preaching, a standard exemplified by many of the pulpit giants of the past, especially Jonathan Edwards and Charles Spurgeon.” This newly revised edition is an essential guide for preachers who want to stir the embers of revival. Piper focuses his study on the example of Jonathan Edwards as an illustration of a leader who submitted to God.
