Sweden has a history of being a stronghold for the Reformation and of influential Evangelical movements. Today this is just history, and Sweden has become one of the most secular nations of the world, with less than 5 percent of the population attending church.

Instead of sending missionaries all over the world, as the churches of Sweden used to do, the political elite has adopted a radical agenda of promoting free abortion and same sex marriages globally. A strong secular and postmodern worldview dominates society and, “it is difficult to express a biblical faith in public or in the academic sphere without deprecation and opposition,” according to Operation World.
Due to secularization, the preaching of liberal theology, humanistic thoughts, and prosperity “gospels,” many churches are weak. On average one evangelical church is closing down every week, and some are even converted into Islamic centers.
In the midst of this are positive signs among evangelicals, and an increased hunger for the Bible—especially among young people and future leaders. But there is a great need of strengthening those positive signs, and Evangelical leaders have targeted one major need—solid theological resources for the next generation of pastors.

The Resource

What is the gospel? It seems like a simple question, yet it has been known to incite some heated responses, even in the church. How are we to formulate a clear, biblical understanding of the gospel? Tradition, reason, and experience all leave us ultimately disappointed. If we want answers, we must turn to the Word of God.

Greg Gilbert does so in What Is the Gospel? Beginning with Paul's systematic presentation of the gospel in Romans and moving through the sermons in Acts, Gilbert argues that the central structure of the gospel consists of four main subjects: God, man, Christ, and a response. The book carefully examines each and then explores the effects the gospel can have in individuals, churches, and the world. Both Christian and non-Christian readers will gain a clearer understanding of the gospel in this valuable resource.
