(Manipuri) Translation Project: Fifty Reasons Jesus Came to Die

The most important questions anyone can ask are: Why was Jesus Christ crucified? Why did he suffer so much? What has this to do with me? Finally, who sent him to his death? The answer to the last question is that God did. Jesus was God's Son. The suffering was unsurpassed, but the whole message of the Bible leads to this answer.

The central issue of Jesus' death is not the cause, but the meaning. That is what this book is about. John Piper has gathered from the New Testament fifty reasons in answer to the most important question that each of us must face: What did God achieve for sinners like us in sending his Son to die?

Despite 200 years of mission work in India by William Carey and others, India continues to be one of the most complex nations in the world. With over 6,000 castesand 33 million gods, Jesus could easily become a simple idol added to the collection of the gods in the temple. However, more and more, India’s population is seeking answers that are only answered through the Word of God and books to help them understand and grow.  The Dalits (the “Untouchable” caste) are educating vast numbers of their children and villages and it is within these lower castes that freedom in Christ is emerging as a call to personal and spiritual liberty.  Today, there is dynamic growth in indigenous mission groups, churches, and Indian Christian leadership. Presenting Jesus—not as just another god—but as the true incarnate Son of God who has brought life, hope, and growth to the national church.

Specifically to Manipur, it has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years. Manipur has had a long record of insurgency and inter-ethnic violence, and they have formed splinter groups who disagree with each other. More importantly, liberal theology, universalism and growing nominalism in the Church have dried up the spirit of outreach to the millions of non-Christians. Christianity is also seen as link to the marginalized, deprived sections of society. Business, politics, arts, culture and the middle and upper classes – all shapers of Indian society – have not yet been impacted by the gospel.
