Seven of the best articles I came across this week:
1. William Tyndale – The Underground Translator. Don’t let this year’s anniversary of the Reformation pass without giving thanks to God for this pioneering translator who gave his life so that everyone could read the Scriptures on their own.
2. Sarah Ruden’s new translation of Augustine’s Confessions has drawn various reactions. I reviewed it here. Peter Brown praises it in the New York Review of Books. James K. A. Smith disagrees with Peter Brown and offers some good reflections on translation.
3. Dale Coulter – The Evangelical Future is Mestizo. Evangelical Protestantism will remain steady or continue to grow at a slow pace, primarily through an increase in ethnic minorities.
4. Abby Hummel – What The Sound of Music Reveals about Our Flawed Characters. We love the heroism of Captain Von Trapp. But most people were more like Uncle Max. What about us?
5. Mark Moring – Catching Some Z’s. How can the church reach the generation coming up behind millennials, a distracted and connected generation? This is a detailed report that gives great insight into the youngest Americans.
6. Michelle Ye Hee Lee in the Washington Post – Is the United States one of seven countries that ‘allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy?’ Factcheckers thought the administration’s claim was dubious, until they looked into the data. We really are this radical.
7. Center for Baptist Renewal – Article on Racial Reconciliation. Worth reading, pondering, and finding ways to practice.
