CRAZY BUSY
A (Mercifully) Short Book about a (Really) Big Problem
Kevin DeYoung

“Busyness kills more Christians than bullets.”

So says pastor Kevin DeYoung in this little book that provides a bracing wake-up call to the church within a breezy, self-effacing style that helps get the message across. There’s good busy, and bad busy, and one of the best ways to differentiate between the two is to step back and examine our motivations and our mission.

The sixth chapter – “A Cruel Kindergarchy” (with its to-the-point subtitle: “You need to stop freaking out about your kids”) is worth the price of the book. I was too busy to read this book, but I did so anyway, and I’m glad I did.

If you’re like me, you’ll see yourself in the mirror of Kevin’s experience and will be prompted to make changes based on the biblical diagnosis we find in these pages. Trust me. You’re too busy not to read this book.

OTHERWORLD
Jared Wilson

I’ve enjoyed getting to know and work with Jared Wilson over the years. He’s a man of God who loves his family and his church, and he’s an excellent writer. I share with him the desire to create “prose that sings” – to articulate beautifully the truth of God so that our hearts’ affections for God are stirred.

Otherworld is Wilson’s first published work of fiction. Understandably, it’s a departure from his previous non-fiction work. It’s also different from the “theology in story” kind of fiction I’ve experimented with.

Otherworld is firmly in the Christian thriller genre, resembling Frank Peretti in some ways (the reality of the spiritual world, dark forces, demon possession, etc.) but clearly distinguishable in others (better character development, not dependent on charismatic speculation about spiritual warfare, etc.).

This was a good story with some great moments of suspense. I hope the book does well so we can see what other fiction may come from Jared in the future.

131 CHRISTIANS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
Mark Galli

Want a refresher course in Christian history? Put down the exhaustive church history book and pick up this volume of short biographical sketches of some of the most well-known Christians through the years.

A compilation of biographical material from Christian History magazine, Galli places these men and women into groups (martyrs, pastors, theologians, poets, etc.) and then tells us about their lives, the beliefs, and the impact they left on the Church and the world.

Read one or two chapters a day, and you’d have a pretty good overview of Christian history within a few months time.
