Think About Such Things


We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Cor. 10:5

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Rom. 12:2

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Phil. 4:8

Lord Jesus, these Scriptures make it clear. Nothing is more daily and transforming than our thought lives. Our emotions and perceptions, values and choices, fears and joys are all connected to our thinking.

So, before the values of this world or the father of lies, Fox News or CNN, the Tweets on our screens or the idols of our hearts claim our thought lives today, we set our minds, gaze, and hearts on you, Jesus. Nothing, and no one, is more true and noble, right and pure, admirable and praiseworthy than you.

Jesus, by the work of the Holy Spirit, may your beauty, truth, and love be the most unavoidable realities in our lives today… and tomorrow and the next day. For the more we see of you, the better we’ll look at everything else by you.

We want your kingship and reign, not the madness and meanness of our current political scene, to rule in our hearts.

We want the awesome truths and riches of the gospel—not the spin of social media or the fears of our hearts, to shape our reactions, sleep, and choices.

We want your mercy and grace, as our Great High Priest—not our biases or selfishness, to determine how we look at other people, challenging situations, and hurtful events.

Jesus, we want the great hope of your return—not the empty promises of money and power, romance and reputation to determine how we live the rest of our days.

Lord Jesus, you alone are worthy of our attention, adoration, and allegiance. With palms up, eyes fixed, and hearts engaged, we enter this October Thursday with you. So very Amen we pray, in your glorious and grace-full name.
