“The prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow… even angels long to look into these things.” 1 Pet. 1:10-12

Lord Jesus, it’s the first Sunday of Advent 2021—my favorite season of the year (until Easter!) Lingering in the promises of the Gospel, engaging with songs of deep ache and great longing, pondering the glories of your two comings… I am so ready for the holy-disruption and hope-igniting of Advent.

The prophets and angels certainly felt these things. I love how Peter described their awe-filled curiosity and great anticipation. Though they didn’t know your name, they knew your comings would be both costly and glorious.

You came to save us from our sins, taking the judgment we deserve. You rose, giving us the righteousness, we could never earn. “Hallelujah!” You have already defeated evil, and at your return, you fill the earth with your glory. Another, “Hallelujah!” No wonder it was hard for both prophets and angels to wait.

Like last year, 2021 has been a year of intense waiting for us as well. Jesus, we are so ready for you to come back to finish making all things new and beautiful. During Advent, take us by the hand and heart, and ignite the hope only you can fulfill, and rescue us from every lesser hope. So very Amen we pray, in your great and gracious name.
