Stillness

Stillness

Be still and know that I am God Psalm 46:10

Sitting still has not been one of my fortes in life. I have a penchant for movement, whether of the nervous, ADD, stay-in-control, or always-be-productive varieties. Relaxing always happens after you attend to whatever you’re going to have to do when you get up from your nap anyway. I learned that from my dad. Dad would even wash the pots supper was prepared in before we sat down to eat, and there is no way a plate, or even a fork, would see the bottom of a dry sink. Everything would be cleaned and put up immediately.

BUT there comes “a time or two” in life when finishing the project before you rest is simply not an option. (Hopefully, you can read my “wink” and imagine the rolling of my eyes about now!) Indeed there are times when we need to hear God say loudly, clearly and dearly, “Be still and know that I am God.” These are the times we must learn to rest in Him, and not rest in any sense of our ability to “finish the project.” This will be one of those weeks for me. Today, I will get dad’s private room ready for him at a local memory care facility. Tomorrow, I will drive to North Carolina and will begin the journey of bringing my 90 year-old-dad, who doesn’t recognize me, to Franklin so my brother and I can care for him as well as we can. Dad isn’t a project, but a man to love, and I’m going to be as still as I can possibly be and know as fully as it is knowable that God really is God, and that he really is trustworthy.

I have a hunch that you might have a similar “project” or two for which stillness and trusting in God are the order of the week. Am I right? Because the gospel is true, let’s be still together, and watch God be God.
