Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,

on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isa. 9:7

Lord Jesus, your righteousness is our surety, your love is our freedom, and your sovereignty is our sanity. From the stable, through your sufferings, to the sky by your ascension, you have been nothing but merciful and mighty.  But we are so ready for the fulfillment of everything this one verse in Isaiah anticipates.

Only one government and one peace are sufficient to meet the needs of our weary hearts and restless world. We rejoice in what you accomplished by your first coming, Jesus, but we ache and wait for the “everything” of your second coming.

Through your resurrection, you were enthroned as “ruler of kings on earth” (Rev. 1:5). King David’s throne became a throne of grace, from which you rule the world with your truth and grace. Eternal discretion—not political elections or evil machinations, determine the future. Hallelujah.

As Lamb of God, Lord of Lords, and “Lamp of the New Jerusalem” (Rev. 21:23)—you are working in all things for our good and your glory. Nothing can derail, deter, or distract you from bringing to completion your good work of redemption and restoration.

Forgive us when we get impatient with your timing, don’t like your providences, or second-guess your goodness. It’s just that we are ready for the Day when carnivores become herbivores—when lions and lambs frolic; and nations and neighbors love you, and each other.

As the Gospel of grace continues its transforming work in our lives, may it advance through our lives. Free us to show up joyfully, love boldly, and hope patiently. So very Amen we pray, in your mighty and merciful name.
