We who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly” (Rom. 8:23)

Lord Jesus, the good news… we live with redemptive discontent, unremitting ache, and heaven-authored craving. It’s good news because our inward groans are an expression of the firstfruits of the Holy Spirit—the first installment and guarantee of the magnificent future you have won for us. Thank you!

We carry the DNA of the Garden of Eden, and Gospel-certified citizenship in the new heaven and new earth. We are SO ready for an eternity of all things new, not one thing broken, and every relationship loving.

Alongside this good news, there’s the daily news. Jesus, we’re better at groaning than waiting. We take our Spirit-given groanings and turn them into a 3-year-old’s whining. We want what you’ve promised now, not later. From life’s back seat, we keep asking, “When are we going to get there?” Hallelujah, for your kindness and patience.

You aren’t slow keeping your promises, you are merciful—extending your grace to our neighbors and the nations, until the Day you return (2 Peter 3:9). It’s easy to forget we matter, but we’re not the point of the entire history of redemption.

Jesus, until the Day, don’t decrease our Spirit-groaning; increase our trust-filled waiting. Rescue us quickly when we look to mere people, more money, or medicated pain to satisfy our heavenly-ache. So Very Amen.
